Today is Imbolc, or as most people now know it, Groundhog Day. Obviously groundhogs have very little to do with the traditional meaning of this holiday, but it is what it is. This is actually one of my favorite holidays, as it celebrates the Celtic goddess Brighid, a fire goddess also referred to as the Bride. To my knowledge this is actually the holiday we get Valentine's Day from!

Imbolc comes between the Winter solstice and the vernal equinox, as a symbol of the coming Spring. Nowadays the groundhog means little more than dashed hopes and a long Winter yet to come, but traditionally it is meant to be a reminder that the longest days of Winter are behind us and the Spring is coming, slowly but surely. It comes in second on my list of favorites after Beltane only because it's still too damn cold.

As a goddess of fire and marriage, Brighid brings the concept of love and warmth to this holiday. Today is a day to celebrate love in its many forms, childbirth, and oddly enough, the sacred wells that have long been associated with this goddess. The wells are a symbol of healing waters and, again, hope for the coming spring.

If you're interested, you can make a Brighid's Cross or other similar crafts to invite the goddess and her good will into your home. She will protect your house and nurture a loving, warm environment. Or at least so they say!

As I'm sure you're aware, Spring doesn't officially begin until March 20th.This doesn't seem to be the case in North Carolina, however. For the past month (being January, keep in mind) the temperature highs have been no lower than 50 Fahrenheit - above 60 for most of the past week. For a while now there have been trees in bloom. Admittedly, I have been told that the blossoms I've seen most around town are a kind of Winter cherry and bloom around this time every year. I think it really says something when you go in to the doctor's office about a cold and they tell you it's probably your Spring allergies acting up.

I love Spring. I love warm weather. I've rather enjoyed the temperatures of late, which have risen to an almost comfortable 65 despite the incessant rain of the last month, even though I'll never be happy as long as it's below 70. Spring coming an entire month and a half early is wonderful in my book, if it weren't for one thing: those Spring allergies I mentioned.

The real reason I know that Spring has come early this year is my nose. Tragic, I know, but every time I go out to class I get a bad case of the sneezes. The sun, the rain, and the warm weather have conspired to put the local plants into reproductive mode at my expense.

Plants are awesome. Warm, sunny weather is awesome. You know what else would be awesome? If I could enjoy it without being sick all the time.

Ah well. Beggars can't be choosers.

DESCRIPTION:
This is a fairly simple layout using the fun motifs of card suits and Roman mazes, which inevitably make me think of Alice in Wonderland. Enjoy!

I have recently been made resident for the first time of my very own apartment. As I am in school and not particularly well, my parents are paying for the apartment as well as utilities and all of the pomp and circumstance contained therein. Additionally my boyfriend has temporarily moved in with me and is also paying rent and contributing excellent company and some furniture. The point remains that I am listed as the only resident of this fabulous piece of one floor, some thousand square foot real estate. I get to decorate, pick furniture, and bitch about my neighbors.

This new place, the first place in years that I've been able to call home and be comfortable in, has brought about a great many positive changes in my life. For the first time since starting college I feel like a real live adult, responsible for my own space and the good and bad that comes along with it.

People don't think about it very often, in my experience, beyond a cursory glance at the intentions behind a place. A person's environment can be vital to their mental health and positive growth. Do your parents love and support you? Yes. Do you love your parents? Yes. Well then, home must be a great environment for you! But it isn't always. Especially if you have any source of stress associated with a place, it can become a strain on you. For years I have felt that I am without a home because I couldn't feel safe in my parent's house. When I lived in a dorm I never felt at peace. When I stayed with my boyfriend I always felt I was imposing. When I had three roommates, I felt like everything around me was out of control.

Now, in a space that I control and that I can make safe, I am starting to really recover from the last several years. Yes, there are other factors, but this is a big one.

So the thing I really want you to take away from this is: don't underestimate the power of a safe place. We all need a place where we can relax and be ourselves. Wherever that might be for you, find it and remember it. When you're feeling crappy or just need to feel safe, go there. It doesn't matter if it's your school's cafeteria, a quiet bookstore, or your own bedroom. The environment is a powerful tool and you should use it when you need it.
